Last summer on this page, I showcased some of the wonderful artwork that has fronted American detective novelist Ross Macdonald’s books over the last six decades. But now comes word that Penguin UK will introduce five of Macdonald’s Lew Archer titles into its Penguin Classics series, all carrying gorgeous, mid-20th-century-vibe cover illustrations by British designer Edward Bettison. The Australia-based blog Caustic Cover Critic features the whole set here. I’m particularly fond of what Bettison has done with The Drowning Pool (originally published in 1950). Penguin will release these handsome paperback additions to your library beginning in May 2012.
