The Lady Is Afraid, by George Harmon Coxe (Dell, 1953), with a cover illustration by Frank Cozzarelli. First released in 1940, this is the second of only two novels starring hawkshaw Max Chauncey Hale, a blue-blooded Bostonian for whom criminal inquiries were more pastime than profession. Hale had previously headlined 1939’s Murder for the Asking. Author Coxe (1901-1984) is better remembered for creating the photographer-sleuths Jack “Flashgun” Casey and Kent Murdock.
