Winchell (Dell, 1953). This is the fourth installment in a nine-book crime series starring New York City Chief Fire Marshal Ben Pedley. In addition to his best-known Sterling pseudonym, Winchell also wrote as Spencer Dean, Jay de Bekker, and Dexter St. Claire.
